The goal of AHA courses is to improve outcomes for people with cardiovascular disease, especially those who need CPR or emergency cardiovascular care (ECC). AHA research shows that providers’ skills begin to decay only weeks after taking standardized resuscitation courses, which can lead to poor clinical care and survival outcomes for cardiac arrest patients. AHA courses utilize “Mastery Learning” and “Overlearning” to improve providers' learning and retention of these critical skills. Students practice skills until they demonstrate mastery, using a combination of video and deliberate practice. They train beyond the minimum standard for behaviors likely to decay, such as rendering high-quality BLS. AHA requires successful completion of skills tests using accurate, objective, and uniform testing. If indicated, remediation provides an additional opportunity for the student to master the necessary skills of the course.

Centra caregivers must pay a $25 convenience fee for all online certifications.  In-person learning remains free to Centra Caregivers.  Register with your Centra person number and use the PROMO code CentraHS.

Heartsaver® classes are held at Centra’s AHA Training Center, located within the Central Virginia Center for Simulation and Virtual Learning. 905 Lakeside Drive, Suite B, Lynchburg, Virginia, 24501.  Please use the main entrance to the Virtual Learning Center.

CLASSES START PROMPTLY ON TIME. Students are expected to attend and participate in the entire course. Due to course content, late admittance is not permitted. Students arriving late will be rescheduled. NO EXCEPTIONS.

In cases of inclement weather, please call (434) 200-2373 after 7:30 am on the day of class to obtain the class status or check the Centra Connect Facebook page.

The PALS Renewal Course is designed for healthcare providers who directly participate in the management of critically ill or injured infants and children. PALS must be required for your job role and have the approval of your department manager.
Pre-test REQUIRED for this course.

A student who enters the PALS Renewal Course MUST be proficient with rhythm identification, PALS pharmacology, principles of high-quality BLS, and PALS treatment algorithms. Any student lacking proficiency will not be able to function successfully in the learning and testing stations and is unlikely to successfully complete the PALS Renewal Course, as these subjects are not covered in detail during the one-day course.

PLEASE NOTE: The AHA PEARS (Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition, and Stabilization) course is NOT equivalent to PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support.)  If you are required to maintain PALS certification, PEARS WILL NOT meet those requirements. PEARS is for physicians and nurses who infrequently see critically ill infants and children, or those who work in a setting where they are not able to provide advanced life support, such as primary or urgent care clinics.

Attendance credit: 8.0 hours

EMS CE Credit: 8.0 ALS Category 1 hours

The goal of AHA courses is to improve outcomes for people with cardiovascular disease, especially those who need CPR or emergency cardiovascular care (ECC). AHA research shows that providers’ skills begin to decay only weeks after taking standardized resuscitation courses, which can lead to poor clinical care and survival outcomes for cardiac arrest patients. AHA courses utilize “Mastery Learning” and “Overlearning” to improve how well providers learn and retain these critical skills. Students practice skills until they demonstrate mastery, using a combination of video and deliberate practice. They train beyond the minimum standard for behaviors that are likely to decay, such as rendering high-quality BLS. AHA requires successful completion of skills tests, as well as successful completion of a video-based written exam (with a score of 84% or higher), using accurate, objective, and uniform testing. If indicated, remediation provides additional opportunity for the student to master the required skills of the course.

PALS Provider classes are held at Centra’s AHA Training Center, located within the Central Virginia Center for Simulation and Virtual Learning. 905 Lakeside Drive, Suite B, Lynchburg, Virginia, 24501.  Please use the main entrance to the Virtual Learning Center.

Select PALS Provider classes are offered at other campuses, including:

The Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition, and Stabilization (PEARS) Provider Course is designed to give healthcare providers the opportunity to acquire, practice, and demonstrate proficiency in the assessment and management of critically ill pediatric patients, with the goal of improving patient outcomes. Students are prepared with foundational skills to assess, recognize, and participate in the initial management of respiratory, shock, and cardiac arrest emergencies until an advanced life support provider arrives.

Objectives:

  • Performance of high-quality child and infant BLS CPR
  • Use of a systematic approach for pediatric assessment
  • Recognition and management of 4 types of acute respiratory problems
  • Utilization of oxygen delivery and basic airway management equipment
  • Recognition and management of 2 types of acute circulatory problems
  • Utilization of shock management equipment and methods of delivering rapid fluid bolus
  • Management of 2 types of cardiac arrest
  • Use of appropriate team communication and dynamics related to resuscitation

PEARS is for physicians and nurses who infrequently see critically ill infants and children, or those who work in a setting where they are not able to provide advanced life support, such as primary or urgent care clinics. Other types of providers may include NP/PA, respiratory therapist, medical/surgical nurse, LPN, school nurse, home health nurse, and emergency medical technician (BLS).

PLEASE NOTE: This course is NOT equivalent to PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support.)  If you are required to maintain PALS certification, this course WILL NOT meet those requirements. Conversely, if PALS certification is out of your scope, PEARS is recommended.

REVIVE! is held at Centra’s AHA Training Center, located within the Central Virginia Center for Simulation and Virtual Learning. 905 Lakeside Drive, Suite B, Lynchburg, Virginia, 24501.  Please use the main entrance to the Virtual Learning Center.

REVIVE! is the Opioid Overdose and Naloxone Education (OONE) program for the Commonwealth of Virginia. REVIVE! training covers understanding opioids, how opioid overdoses happen, risk factors for opioid overdoses, and how to respond to an opioid overdose emergency with the administration of naloxone.

Why “REVIVE!”?

Since 2013, fatal drug overdose has been the leading method of unnatural death in Virginia, surpassing all other forms of unnatural death including homicide, suicide, motor vehicles accidents, and undetermined deaths. Opioids have been the driving force behind the large increases in fatal overdoses since 2013. In 2019, there were 1,289 deaths from all-opioids which includes all versions of fentanyl, heroin, prescription opioids and U-47700 (an illicitly manufactured synthetic opioid). (OCME Quarterly Report)

What is naloxone?

Naloxone is a prescription medicine that reverses opioid overdoses. It works by temporarily blocking the effects of opioids and helps the person to breathe again. Naloxone is the generic name, and it can also be found under the brand name, Narcan.

How can I get naloxone?

Although naloxone is a prescription medicine, Virginia – like many states – has passed laws making it available as a standing order. The statewide standing order allows pharmacists in Virginia to dispense naloxone without requiring an individual prescription. Many community-based organizations have also established standing orders to allow community dispensing.

Anyone can access naloxone by:

  • Getting a prescription from their doctor; or
  • using the standing order written for the general public; or
  • Virginia’s Local Health Departments and some Community Services Boards at no cost. Please call your local agency to check for availability.

Those who attend the REVIVE! Opioid Overdose and Naloxone Education (OONE) program for the Commonwealth of Virginia hosted here at Centra will receive 2 free doses of nasal naloxone.
