The Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Provider Course is a two-day class designed to enhance student’s proficiency in the assessment and management of patients experiencing cardiovascular emergencies through video learning, group discussion, and hands-on practice. Hands-on practice is based on simulated clinical scenarios at various learning stations involving active participation. Students will practice essential skills individually and as part of a team, including assuming the role of Team Leader. Realistic simulations reinforce the following key concepts: skills acquisition, complex medical decision-making, and teamwork.
Objectives:
- Describe and demonstrate high-quality BLS CPR
- Describe and demonstrate patient assessment using a systematic approach
- Recognition and management of cardiopulmonary arrest, post-cardiac arrest care, acute arrhythmia, stroke, and acute coronary syndromes (ACS)
- Describe and demonstrate how to properly manage patients using AHA ACLS algorithms
- Describe methods of oxygen delivery and demonstrate proper airway management
- Describe and demonstrate proper use of cardiac monitor, including ECG monitoring, rhythm identification, and defibrillation/cardioversion/transcutaneous pacing
- Describe proper establishment of intraosseous (IO) access
- Describe and demonstrate proper administration of ACLS meds, including proper dose and route
- Describe and demonstrate proper team communication and dynamics related to resuscitation
The ACLS Provider Course is designed for healthcare providers who directly participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest and other cardiovascular emergencies. ACLS must be required for your job role and have the approval of your department manager.
Pre-test is REQUIRED for this class.
PLEASE NOTE: BLS CPR Provider Certification is not provided as part of the ACLS course. RNs should have taken a basic arrhythmia class prior to ACLS. Other caregivers should review, at a minimum, basic arrhythmia content. If needed, they may take a self-study course or take the basic arrhythmia class. For a free online review, visit www.skillstat.com/tools/ecg-simulator.
Attendance credit: 12.0 hours
EMS CE credit hours given per OEMS guidelines.
The goal of AHA courses is to improve outcomes for people with cardiovascular disease, especially those who need CPR or emergency cardiovascular care (ECC). AHA research shows that providers’ skills begin to decay only weeks after taking standardized resuscitation courses, which can lead to poor clinical care and survival outcomes for cardiac arrest patients. AHA courses utilize “Mastery Learning” and “Overlearning” to improve how well providers learn and retain these critical skills. Students practice skills until they demonstrate mastery, using a combination of video and deliberate practice. They train beyond the minimum standard for behaviors that are likely to decay, such as rendering high-quality BLS. AHA requires successful completion of skills tests, as well as successful completion of a video-based written exam (with a score of 84% or higher), using accurate, objective, and uniform testing. If indicated, remediation provides additional opportunity for the student to master the required skills of the course.
ACLS Provider classes are held at Centra’s AHA Training Center, located within the Central Virginia Center for Simulation and Virtual Learning. 905 Lakeside Drive, Suite B, Lynchburg, Virginia, 24501. Please use the main entrance to the Virtual Learning Center.
