CPR is available to all Centra caregivers. Non-licensed/certified caregivers or employees not providing direct patient care should take HEARTSAVER® FIRST AID CPR AED. Some examples include security personnel, concierge, ambassadors, patient sitters, unlicensed mental health associates, occupational therapy assistants, dieticians, and any admin or non-clinical employees. Others as determined by department policy.
PLEASE NOTE: Any caregiver who is licensed or certified and provides direct patient care is required to have AHA BLS certification. Heartsaver is NOT a BLS certification course and WILL NOT meet that requirement. If you are unsure which course to take or which is required for your role, refer to departmental policy, reach out to your manager/direct supervisor, or contact the Centra AHA Training Center at ahatrainingcenter@centrahealth.com.

The goal of AHA courses is to improve outcomes for people with cardiovascular disease, especially those who need CPR or emergency cardiovascular care (ECC). AHA research shows that providers’ skills begin to decay only weeks after taking standardized resuscitation courses, which can lead to poor clinical care and survival outcomes for cardiac arrest patients. AHA courses utilize “Mastery Learning” and “Overlearning” to improve how well providers learn and retain these critical skills. Students practice skills until they demonstrate mastery, using a combination of video and deliberate practice. They train beyond the minimum standard for behaviors that are likely to decay, such as rendering high-quality BLS. AHA requires successful completion of skills tests using accurate, objective, and uniform testing. If indicated, remediation provides additional opportunity for the student to master the required skills of the course.
Heartsaver® classes are held at Centra’s AHA Training Center, located within the Central Virginia Center for Simulation and Virtual Learning. 905 Lakeside Drive, Suite B, Lynchburg, Virginia, 24501. Please use the main entrance to the Virtual Learning Center.
