CPR is available to all Centra caregivers. Any caregiver who is licensed or certified and provides direct patient care is required to have AHA BLS certification. Others as determined by department policy.
CENTRA CAREGIVERS MUST CLAIM AND SUBMIT
THEIR BLS CARD TO HRHELP@CENTRAHEALTH.COM
NOTE: Non-licensed caregivers or employees not providing direct patient care should take HEARTSAVER CPR/AED/FIRST AID. Some examples include security personnel, concierge, ambassadors, patient sitters, unlicensed mental health associates, occupational therapy assistants, dieticians, and admin or non-clinical employees. If you are unsure which course to take or which is required for your role, refer to departmental policy, contact your manager/direct supervisor, or contact the Centra AHA Training Center at ahatrainingcenter@centrahealth.com.
The AHA BLS course trains students to provide high-quality CPR to victims of all ages in cardiac arrest. Students are taught how to perform these skills individually or as a team. Participants of this course may provide care to patients in a wide variety of settings, including in and out of the hospital. Students must complete skills tests and a written exam at the end of class to obtain a course completion card.
Objectives:
- Understand the AHA Chain of Survival
- Recognize when a victim needs CPR and how high-quality CPR can improve the outcome
- Describe and demonstrate high-quality CPR on adults/children/infants
- Describe the importance of early AED use and demonstrate the proper operation.
- Describe and demonstrate proper ventilation using a bag-mask device, as well as an understanding of other methods of ventilation, such as using a barrier device or m-t-m.
- Describe and demonstrate how to relieve foreign-body airway obstruction (FBAO) for adults/children and infants.
- Describe the importance of high-performance teams and proper team dynamics
- Perform as an effective team member during multi-rescuer CPR.
Attendance credit: 2.5 hours
The goal of AHA courses is to improve outcomes for people with cardiovascular disease, especially those who need CPR or emergency cardiovascular care (ECC). AHA research shows that providers’ skills begin to decay only weeks after taking standardized resuscitation courses, which can lead to poor clinical care and survival outcomes for cardiac arrest patients. AHA courses utilize “Mastery Learning” and “Overlearning” to improve providers' learning and retention of these critical skills. Students practice skills until they demonstrate mastery, using a combination of video and deliberate practice. They train beyond the minimum standard for behaviors likely to decay, such as rendering high-quality BLS. AHA requires successful completion of skills tests and a written exam (with a score of 84% or higher), using accurate, objective, and uniform testing. If indicated, remediation provides an additional opportunity for the student to master the required skills of the course.
